ECOWAS Chief of Defence staff to meet in Accra

Chiefs of Defense Staff from Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries will meet in Accra on Thursday and Friday, August 17 and 18 2023, to finalise plans for the deployment of Standby Force in Niger Republic.

As a follow-up to the directive of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its Extraordinary Summit on the political situation in the Republic of Niger held on 10th August 2023 in Abuja, Nigeria, the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CCDC) has commenced the activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force for the restoration of constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

In a related development, ECOWAS has expressed sadness with various attacks by armed groups in the Republic of Niger that led to the death of several Nigerien soldiers.

ECOWAS also in a Press Statement condemned these attacks and conveyed its deepest condolences to the people of Niger and the families of the soldiers who lost their lives.

ECOWAS called on the CNSP-military leadership in Niger to restore constitutional order in order to focus on the security of the country that has become increasingly fragile since the attempted coup d‘Etat against a democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum.
