Kano State Government Launches Verification of 10,800 Newly Employed Workers by Ganduje

The Kano State Government has set up a 22-member committee to verify the employment of 10,800 civil servants hired by the previous administration. Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje conducted a massive recruitment exercise in the final days of his tenure, which raised concerns about irregularities in the process. Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration has pledged to investigate the recruitment and ensure transparency.

Inaugurating the committee at his office on Wednesday, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Abdullahi Baffa-Bichi, alleged that the recruitment was conducted without following the established rules and regulations. He highlighted the challenges inherited by the present administration, including salary and pension deductions, uncollected waste, abandoned healthcare services, and street lights without diesel supply.

Furthermore, Dr Baffa-Bichi stated that the employment of over 10,000 civil servants without adherence to the due process was viewed as an anomaly. As a result, the committee’s mandate includes evaluating the entire employment process, determining if the recruitment met the manpower needs of the relevant ministries, and addressing allegations of nepotism.

The committee is also tasked with compiling a list of the newly employed staff and assessing the financial implications on the state’s finances. They will identify individuals already enlisted in the state payroll and those awaiting appointment letters due to the suspension of the employment exercise by the current government.

The Secretary to the State Government emphasized the importance of the committee’s extensive experience and urged them to submit a report within two weeks from the date of inauguration. The committee, led by Umar Shehu-Minjibir, Chairman of the state Civil Service Commission, has been given three weeks to complete their assignment.

In response, the committee chairman assured the state government of their commitment to the task, promising to treat the civil servants employed by the previous administration fairly and without bias. He emphasized the committee’s dedication to completing the assignment within the stipulated timeframe.

The Kano State Government eagerly awaits the committee’s recommendations and is open to implementing any suggestions provided.
