ECOWAS Troops Declare Readiness to Restore Civil Rule in Niger

Troops from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have expressed their preparedness to join the standby force tasked with restoring civil rule in Niger.

The declaration was made by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa, during a meeting held in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

“Democracy is the core principle we uphold and promote. We have gathered here not only to react to events but to proactively navigate a path that ensures peace and fosters stability,” he stated.

According to Al Jazeera, ECOWAS Commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah revealed that all member states, except those under military rule and Cape Verde, have pledged their readiness to participate in the standby force.

Recall that after the seizure of power by the presidential guards from President Mohamed Bazoum, ECOWAS issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military, demanding the restoration of the elected president or risk facing possible military action.

In response to the ECOWAS threat, leaders of the junta in Mali and Burkina Faso warned that any military intervention in Niger Republic would be deemed an act of war, highlighting a division in the region between coastal countries and those in the volatile Sahel region.
