The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ebonyi State Chapter, has undertaken to offer regular prayers for Nigeria’s leaders during the inauguration of its newly elected executives.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, was officiated by Pastor Samson Fatotun, the CAN National Secretary, who represented the National President, Most Reverend Daniel Okoh.
During the event, Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by his Deputy, Princess Patricia Obila, urged the association to refrain from baseless criticism against the nation’s leaders.
While acknowledging that constructive criticism is essential for the growth of any administration, Nwifuru emphasized the importance of maturity, avoiding bitter contentions and falsehoods that could destabilize the nation.
The Governor encouraged CAN and all Christians to pray for their leaders in order to foster good governance.
Nwifuru stated, “Let us pray for our leaders; let us provide them with guidance. The time for negative criticism has passed. Criticisms are necessary for our progress, but if you must criticize, do so maturely and with well-reasoned points. Our leaders need your prayers to grow, and we need your prayers to serve you better.”
Congratulating the new CAN executives, Governor Nwifuru urged them to view their inauguration as a calling to serve God and humanity, rather than a means for personal gain.
He also urged them to be exemplary ambassadors of the Church and to spread messages of good moral behavior in their respective denominations to combat the prevailing social vices plaguing the nation.
The Governor added, “I congratulate all those who have been inaugurated today.
“And remember, this is not a business venture; it is not about making money, but rather a divine summons to serve God and humanity.”
“Also, we implore you to assist us as ambassadors of Christ, within your respective denominations, to preach against these social vices and educate our people about the rewards of exhibiting good character.”
In his inaugural address, the new CAN Chairman, Rev. Scamb Nwokolo, appealed to all Church leaders to speak with a unified voice on critical issues affecting the Church in Ebonyi State and Nigeria as a whole.
He pledged to lead an inclusive administration that values diversity and builds upon the achievements of his predecessor. This includes reviving and revitalizing the School Evangelism Program of CAN in the state.
“We assure you that relying on God’s grace, we will do our best to ensure that this organization continues to fulfill its statutory functions in the face of contemporary challenges in our country.”
The CAN Vice Chairman, Reverend Joseph Nwibo, also expressed his unwavering support for the new Chairman.
In a brief homily, Archbishop Chidi Igwe, the Abakaliki Synod Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, urged Christians to rally behind and support the leaders chosen by God.
Other officials inaugurated alongside the Chairman included Rev. Joseph Nwibo as Vice Chairman, Rev Fr. Joseph Origbo as Secretary, Pastor Obed Elom and Senior Pastor Solomon Eriugo as Assistant Secretary and Treasurer respectively, among others.
Nwokolo assumes the role of Chairman, succeeding Rev. Fr. Abraham Nwali, who currently serves as the Southeast zonal CAN Chairman.
