Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has responded to allegations that his administration has disregarded the welfare of people living with disabilities. The former Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Mrs Uche Ajuluchukwu, recently accused Soludo of not allocating any funds to the Disability Commission since taking office.
The Disability Commission, acknowledging the achievements of its members in recent sports competitions, expressed disappointment in feeling neglected by the current government.
In a statement issued by his press secretary, Mr Christian Aburime, Governor Soludo refuted the allegations, declaring them false. Aburime stated, “It is unfortunate that Mrs Ajuluchukwu has chosen to misrepresent Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s dedication to inclusivity and empowerment for all citizens, including Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).” He also suggested that her claims were either misguided or based on ignorance.
Aburime pointed out that contrary to Ajuluchukwu’s assertions, Governor Soludo’s administration has implemented significant measures to ensure the welfare and empowerment of vulnerable segments of society, particularly PWDs.
“It is evident that Mrs Ajuluchukwu has not adequately researched the government’s initiatives before making baseless accusations,” Aburime noted.
He further explained, “To set the record straight, the Anambra State Government, through the office of the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, has provided support to approximately twelve vulnerable non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and associations in the state. This empowerment was undertaken as a means to alleviate the hardships faced by individuals with disabilities, including the visually impaired, the deaf and dumb, and children with special needs. These interventions aim to improve the quality of life and create opportunities for PWDs.”
Aburime concluded by stating that Governor Soludo’s administration welcomes constructive criticism based on verified information, rather than misleading narratives.
