Nigeria is taking significant steps to enhance cross-border trade with Cameroon and Chad, aimed at boosting the regional economy and creating employment opportunities. The acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, recently met with the Governor of Borno State, Prof Babagana Zulum, in Abuja, to discuss plans for revitalizing trade activities in the North Eastern region.

Adeniyi emphasized the importance of collaboration with border communities in Borno, particularly with the successful degradation of insurgency in the area. By re-establishing a strong relationship with Cameroon and the southern part of Chad, the NCS aims to leverage this opportunity for increased trade and economic growth.

Recognizing the longstanding partnership between the NCS and Borno State Government in border security and humanitarian services, Adeniyi assured the governor of the administration’s commitment to engaging with the military in developing new measures for re-establishing cross-border trade infrastructure.

Governor Zulum commended the NCS for their efforts in improving the standard of living for internally displaced persons affected by the Boko Haram insurgency. He expressed his support for continued collaboration with the NCS to promote trans-border trade in the North-East, particularly in Borno State.

The NCS has been instrumental in providing essential aid, including food and non-food items, to vulnerable communities in Borno. These efforts have helped alleviate the hardships faced by victims of the insurgency. Strengthening cross-border trade will further contribute to sustainable economic development and provide employment opportunities for the people of the state.

By prioritizing cross-border trade with Cameroon and Chad, Nigeria aims to stimulate economic growth, foster regional integration, and harness the potential of its North Eastern region. This initiative demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to expanding trade networks, improving livelihoods, and leveraging existing relationships to drive economic prosperity.

As Nigeria progresses on its path towards strengthening cross-border trade, it is poised to unlock new opportunities for collaboration, investment, and socio-economic development. The NCS will play a pivotal role in facilitating trade, ensuring the smooth flow of goods, and promoting regional cooperation. Through sustained efforts, Nigeria aims to become a hub for cross-border trade, fostering economic vitality and prosperity for all stakeholders involved.
