The Police in Burkina Faso have successfully neutralized 40 Islamist fighters, according to the army’s announcement on Sunday.

The terrorists launched an ambush on a police reconnaissance mission in Koulpelogo province in the north-eastern region of the country on Saturday, as confirmed by the military.

Tragically, five police officers lost their lives during the attack.

For years, armed groups have remained active in the Sahel state, as well as its neighboring countries, Mali and Niger.

Notably, some of these armed groups have sworn allegiance to notorious terrorist organizations—Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

The ongoing conflict with these armed groups has resulted in thousands of casualties and the displacement of millions of innocent civilians.

All three countries are currently under the leadership of military officials, who assumed power through military coups, with the most recent one occurring in Niger on July 26.

Burkina Faso, home to a population of approximately 21 million people, is currently governed by a military transitional government. However, despite their promise to eradicate jihadists following a coup in the autumn, their efforts have yet to yield success.
