In a resolute statement, Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, has expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety, reliability, and sustainability of Nigeria’s bodies of water throughout the nation.
Oyetola made this declaration upon assuming office in Abuja on Monday. Recognizing the ocean as a crucial driver of sustainable economic growth, environmental preservation, and technological innovation, he emphasized the immense potential held by the country’s marine resources.
“Our oceans cover more than two-thirds of the African planet’s surface. Looking ahead, my vision is anchored in the responsible management and utilization of our marine resources, benefiting not only our economy but also the overall health of our planet,” stated Oyetola.
Highlighting the enormous global worth of the blue economy, estimated at over $1.5 trillion annually, the minister underscored Nigeria’s potential to be a significant player in the sector, given its size and the extent of its blue economy.
Oyetola emphasized that the sector has the capacity to make substantial contributions to revenue generation and job creation, stressing the need for practical strategies to optimize the utilization of Nigeria’s inland rivers, lakes, and waterways for cargo transportation and passenger movement.
“This can be achieved through a comprehensive dredging campaign for our strategically important inland waterways, making them navigable for the efficient passage of goods and people,” Oyetola explained.
He further emphasized the necessity of promoting better cooperation and coordination among key agencies such as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, to ensure smooth operations and effective utilization of resources.
Drawing from his strong private sector background, Oyetola expressed his intention to promote increased private sector involvement while enhancing efficiency through specialization and clear delineation of core responsibilities within these units.
Oyetola envisioned this administration as an opportunity to effect positive change and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
He called for the cooperation of the ministry’s staff in achieving national development goals, emphasizing his role as the team leader who is available to support them, listen to their ideas, and champion the growth of Nigeria’s marine resources.
“Together, we shall embark on a journey that holds immense promise and responsibility. I firmly believe that by fulfilling these objectives, we will make significant contributions towards realizing the President’s renewed Hope Agenda in the Marine and Blue Economy sectors,” Oyetola affirmed.
