The Governor of Enugu State in Southeast Nigeria, Peter Mbah, has recently inaugurated an eight-member committee tasked with investigating the affairs of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu, a state-owned polytechnic institution.
During the inauguration ceremony at Government House in Enugu on Monday, Governor Mbah expressed his confidence in the committee’s leadership and members, stating that they were chosen to ensure credibility within the institution. The committee, led by Chairman Prof. Ed Nwobodo and Secretary Chinenye Angela, will focus on examining the accounts, management practices, and staff conduct of IMT.
Representing the Governor, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the State Government, reminded the committee of the importance of their work, emphasizing that their findings and recommendations would chart a new path for the institution and higher education initiatives in Enugu state.
The committee’s terms of reference include evaluating the legal and policy framework governing the formation of the Business Committee, analyzing the various student fees charged, investigating payment methods and designated accounts, and examining the overall management of fee-related processes.
In addition, the committee is mandated to assess the adherence to relevant laws, regulations, and institutional policies in the selection and appointment of staff members, particularly in leadership positions such as Heads of Department and Deputy Rector. They will also scrutinize all streams of revenue generation for the institution, delve into revenue collection mechanisms, accounting practices, and the overall financial resource management. Furthermore, the committee will investigate any instances of undue financial demands on students, whether imposed by lecturers or the administrative body.
The committee members are also empowered to explore any other pertinent areas that may emerge during the investigation and are expected to deliver well-founded conclusions and recommendations based on their comprehensive examination.
Responding on behalf of the committee, Prof. Nwobodo expressed gratitude to Governor Mbah for the opportunity to serve and assured him that the committee would carry out their duties with utmost diligence and professionalism.
“I am confident that this committee will conduct a thorough job so that in the years to come, we can look back and say that this was commendable,” Prof. Nwobodo stated. “I have faith in the men and women you have chosen, and I am certain that they will excel in their tasks.”
The committee has been given a two-week deadline to submit their reports, after which their findings will be reviewed and appropriate actions taken.
