Deputy Speaker urges Umahi to consider roads investment funds for infrastructure development

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has asked the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to consider road investment funds to accelerate the development of infrastructure in Nigeria.

The deputy speaker stated this on Monday while delivering a goodwill message at a reception held in honour of the former governor.

Mr Kalu said the road investment fund will prove an alternative means of funding roads and other infrastructure.

He noted that, in the face of financial constraints, the government must consider leveraging private funds through Public Private Partnerships.

The deputy speaker also urged Umahi to work closely with the legislature in achieving improving the infrastructure in the state.

“We will like to see you using a road investment fund that is similar to the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA). And this infrastructure fund will help to bridge the gap.

“I want to emphasise that it will provide a stable fund for your operation because these ideas you are bringing on board, if the funds are not there, you may not be able to achieve them. So, it’s important that your office thinks in that direction.”

Mr Umahi and 44 others were earlier sworn in at the State House in Abuja.
