Nigeria’s esteemed sprint hurdler, Tobi Amusan, will embark on the formidable task of defending her 100m women’s hurdles title at the highly anticipated 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The event, set to unfold on Tuesday, will witness Amusan take to the stage at the esteemed National Athletics Centre in Budapest, precisely at 6:12 pm Nigerian time.
Filled with unbridled enthusiasm, the 26-year-old athlete approaches this momentous occasion following her recent clearance to participate in the championship by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). This clearance comes in the wake of a Whereabouts Failure Charge, which threatened her eligibility.
Amusan, who hails from Ogun State, has been assigned to lane four for the final heat of the first round. She will face fierce competition in her quest to secure one of the coveted four slots for the semi-finals. Among her competitors in this heat is Megan Tapper of Jamaica, the esteemed bronze medalist at the Olympic Games.
During the previous edition of the World Athletics Championships held in Oregon, United States, Amusan soared to great heights. She commenced her campaign with an astonishing 12.40 African record in the event, surpassing all expectations. In an awe-inspiring display of skill and determination, she then shattered Kendra Harrison’s formidable 12.20 world record, which had remained untouched since 2016, with an incredible 12.12 run.
Amusan’s unprecedented feat culminated in her capturing the illustrious gold medal in the final, thereby etching her name in Nigerian athletics history as the very first Nigerian world outdoor champion.
