El-Rufai cautions Tinubu, ECOWAS not to go to war with Niger, says ‘ they’re our brothers’

A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, against military intervention in Niger Republic.

He said any military intervention within the sub-region would be a war between brothers.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the ECOWAS had disclosed plans to use force as a last option if the coup leaders in Niger did not relinquish power to ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

Reacting to the ECOWAS’ threat,  Mr El Rufai in a tweet on Tuesday said the people of Niger Republic are one and the same with those living in northern Nigeria.

The former Kaduna governor said,: “As ECOWAS beats the drums of war, I recall the 1970s rock classic by Dire Straits – ‘Brothers in Arms’, because a war within our subregion is a war between brothers.

“Indeed, the people of Niger Republic are one and the same with those living in Northern Nigeria. Let us bend therefore over backwards to avoid this civil war between brothers.”

Speaking on his personal life, Mr El-Rufai said he was going to enjoy his life, especially after serving public for the past 10 years non-stop.

He said: “And so for this bright Tuesday, please enjoy this classic and reflect on the equally timeless lyrics. Music is something to enjoy, but being so overwhelmed with public affairs in the last 10 years, I have lost valuable pleasurable moments. Time to catch up on lost time. Enjoy!! Life is too short not too!! – @ elrufai”
