The Niger Crisis: Abdulsalami, Touray, Ribadu Meet ECOWAS Chairman, Tinubu in Aso Rock

In the midst of the lingering political crisis in the Republic of Niger, a high-level meeting took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, leader of the ECOWAS delegation to Niger Republic, and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to President Bola Tinubu, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, convened to discuss the recent developments in the embattled country.

Insider sources have confirmed that Abdulsalami and the ECOWAS delegation are actively exploring all possible avenues to prevent a war with Niger. The military junta in Niger has expressed its willingness to engage in dialogue to resolve the impasse. President Tinubu, cognizant of the strong public sentiment against any war in Niger, is seeking a solution that avoids military conflict without undermining his position.

Internationally, the African Union (AU) has taken a significant step by suspending Niger from all of its institutions and activities in response to the recent coup. This suspension will remain in effect until constitutional order is restored in the country, including the transfer of power to democratically elected President Mohammed Bazoum.

In a communique issued on Tuesday, the AU emphasized its decision to suspend Niger in accordance with its relevant instruments and frameworks. The AU called upon all member states and the international community to reject the unconstitutional change of government and refrain from actions that could legitimize the illegal regime in Niger.

The political crisis in Niger continues to unfold, with stakeholders both within and outside the region engaged in efforts to find a peaceful resolution. The meeting between Abdulsalami, Touray, Ribadu, and Tinubu reflects the commitment of key figures to navigate a complex landscape while upholding democratic principles and ensuring regional stability.
