Ogun govt seals 10 buildings for contravening regulation laws

The Government of Ogun State, through its Building Production and Management Authority (OGBPMA), has sealed no fewer than 10 buildings in the State for allegedly contravening building regulation laws.

The buildings were sealed in Ilaro and Abeokuta, while two owners of commercial buildings were served with notices.

Addressing newsmen during an enforcement exercise in Agbara, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, the Acting General Manager of the building management Authority, Engr. Olakunle Olaniran, stated that the sealed buildings in Abeokuta included a house located at Ibara, and four others at Adatan, Abiola Way and Ita-Eko, all within the State capital.

According to Olaniran, the sanctions came due to “contravention of planning permit, unauthorised construction, non-certification of the building process, lack of professional guidance and use of poor building materials.”

He disclosed that, “One of the buildings sealed in Abeokuta obtained a permit for a storey residential development, but commenced a development of a four-storey building, which shows intent for commercial use.”

The acts, he said, are “inimical to proper planning, as the specifications for commercial use must factor key requirements like parking spaces, among other things,” stressing that “such sharp practices will not be condoned in the state.”

Speaking on the enforcement exercise in Ilaro, Olaniran explained that two filling stations, two commercial buildings and one hotel were sealed at the Yewa South Local Government headquarters.

Olaniran berated the illegal and haphazard developments in communities despite agency enlightenment and sensitisation on the need to build right and obtain necessary building approvals.

He emphasised that the agency would not rest on its oars at ensuring that building and construction works were done in line with the extant laws of the state.
