The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, has praised the Acting Inspector General of Police (Ag. IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for his unwavering commitment to community policing.
The monarch, who expressed his admiration during the IGP’s visit to his Alarere residence in Ibadan, described community policing as the most effective solution to the security challenges that Nigeria is facing.
Speaking through the ‘Baba Kekere’, Sen. Kola Balogun, the Olubadan acknowledged the new Nigeria Police boss’ initiative to implement the community policing strategy by leveraging technology and prioritizing the training and welfare of officers and men of the force.
In a press statement released by his Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola, the monarch affirmed that the Ag. IGP is indeed the most suitable candidate for the current period in the country’s history. He referred to the IGP as a symbol of great resilience and divine mercy, considering the trials he has faced in the force.
He remarked, “You have truly paid your dues. You have cheated death on multiple occasions. Despite being denied well-deserved promotions to the position of Commissioner of Police twice, you have reached the zenith of your career through the grace of God. That same grace will sustain you and lead you to significant success in this prestigious position.”
The monarch went on to highlight the exemplary approach taken by the new Police Command helmsman in Oyo State, Compol Adebola Hamzat, who assumed office a few weeks ago. He emphasized Hamzat’s competence and dedication to the new vision of community policing, as evidenced by his engagement with key stakeholders to champion this cause.
The Olubadan stressed, “Oyo State is relatively peaceful, although we still face some minor security challenges. However, the CP has demonstrated the capacity and capability to address them since his arrival, and we are immensely grateful for it.”
In response, the Ag. IGP expressed gratitude to the monarch for the support and cooperation that the Oyo State Command has received. This visit marked the first of its kind to be made in the Southwestern part of the country. He pleaded for the continuation of this gracious support, asserting that the new vision of the Nigeria Police regarding community policing requires even more involvement from the traditional institution, as it is the closest authority to the people.
Egbetokun emphasized the strategic importance of Oyo State in terms of security due to its location and history. He mentioned that the highest ranks of the Force always conduct a thorough search for the most qualified officer to be assigned as the Command’s helmsman in the state.
The Ag. IGP further elaborated on the new vision of the force, emphasizing its service-driven nature, compliance with the rule of law, people-friendly approach, and swift response to crime. This vision aims to improve communities and take the Force to greater heights. He disclosed that his visit was to seek the understanding and support of the monarch, as the roles of traditional rulers are crucial in driving this vision.
