Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu for appointing 48 ministers to his cabinet, deeming it a reckless squandering of public funds.
Mr. Showunmi voiced his concerns during a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday.
He argued that Nigeria is currently grappling with far more urgent issues that demand attention, such as accountability and justice, stabilizing the national currency, security, national unity, the economy (particularly job creation), and a complete overhaul of national values and attitudes.
“The concerns at the forefront of our nation’s challenges are numerous and must be urgently addressed,” said Mr. Sowunmi.
Furthermore, he urged the government to make concerted efforts to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidy.
Mr. Showunmi also raised objections to the current methods of distributing fuel subsidy relief funds, casting doubt on whether the N5 billion allocated by state governors would effectively achieve its intended goals.
He further called upon the government to take immediate action to prevent further depreciation of the national currency, as he believed that the measures implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria thus far have failed to yield positive results.
