Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, on Tuesday, officially launched a 12-member committee tasked with the distribution of the N5bn Federal government’s palliatives in the State.
In line with his commitment to a non-partisan, transparent, and credible distribution process, Governor AbdulRazaq emphasized the importance of ensuring that the palliatives reach the most vulnerable members of society.
While addressing the committee, the Governor stressed that while food palliatives serve as a temporary means of extending support and empathy to the people, it is not the only step the government has taken to alleviate the difficulties brought about by the removal of fuel subsidies. He highlighted the government’s investment in gas and electricity-powered vehicles, as well as efforts to boost agricultural productivity, manufacturing, and small and medium-scale enterprises.
The Governor urged the committee to work together to overcome the current challenges, stating, “We are in this together, and I plead that we work together as one people bound by one destiny to get over this current challenge.”
Governor AbdulRazaq expressed his confidence in the committee members, commending them for accepting the responsibility and urging them to set an example for the rest of Kwara State.
The committee’s objectives include engaging various stakeholders and communities, such as labor unions, trade unions, and marketers, to ensure fair and representative distribution of the pallets. Additionally, they will coordinate and distribute rice palliatives in 10kg bags and provide recommendations on the most effective approach to handle the maize component of the palliatives.
The timeframe for the committee’s assignment will be determined by several factors, such as the receipt of the remaining N2bn from the Federal Government. This sum will then be used to purchase additional food supplies in accordance with the committee’s terms of reference.
Commissioner of Police, Ebunoluwa Rotimi Adelesi, speaking on behalf of the committee, expressed gratitude to Governor AbdulRazaq for entrusting them with this responsibility. Adelesi pledged transparency throughout the process and assured the public that deserving individuals would receive the palliatives. She concluded by stating, “We will not let you down.”
The committee comprises notable individuals such as CP Adelesi, His Royal Highness Dr. Haliru Yahaya (OON), Abdulrasheed Shafi (DSS), Prof Hamzah Abdulraheem (Secretary-General of JNI, Kwara State), and Bishop Sunday Timothy Adewole (CAN).
Other committee members include Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe (CSO), Mrs. Grace Funke Bolaji (CSO), Dr. Saudat AbdulBaqi, Stephen Owoyale, Comrade Yusuf Bashir (representing people living with disabilities), Binta Abubakar Mora (NUJ), and Abdulrahman Babatunde Ameen (Secretary).
