In a groundbreaking development, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has given his approval for the demolition of slums in Garki, Jabi, and 28 other districts. This move follows a comprehensive survey conducted by the Federal Capital Development Authority under the current administration.
The FCTA has stated that approximately 6,000 buildings have been marked for demolition as part of an ambitious effort to eradicate shanties and illegal structures from the territory.
With the aim of restoring the master plan of the FCT, Minister Wike, who previously served as the Governor of Rivers State, affirmed his commitment to demolishing all illegal structures and putting an end to land speculations during his inauguration as Minister on Monday. Having personally toured the FCT at night, Minister Wike expressed his dismay at the distortion of the territory’s master plan due to the proliferation of illegal structures in green areas of Abuja, emphasizing his determination to remove them.
“At least 6,000 illegal structures in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) across 30 areas might be demolished by the Federal Government,” Wike stated. He further added, “We will reclaim our land and allocate it to those who are willing to develop, on the condition that they must sign an agreement to develop within a specified timeframe.”
However, Muktar Galadima, the Director of the FCTA Department of Development Control, announced that a new survey will be conducted. Galadima emphasized the need for an updated survey, as the previous one was conducted in February 2022.
