Communities along the Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi road in Kano State are appealing to the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, to conduct an investigation into the contractors responsible for the dualisation of the Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi road project, which has been left unfinished.

Recall that on Thursday, June 11, 2021, the Federal Government commenced the construction of a dual carriageway from Kano to Dayi town in Katsina State. The project, awarded at the cost of N62.7 billion, is intended to cover a total length of 82.3km and aims to alleviate transportation challenges within the region while facilitating the movement of agricultural produce from rural areas to markets.

Expressing their concerns, Abdullahi Kanye, a community leader from Kanye village in Gwarzo local government area of Kano State, stated in an interview with Media Talk Africa on Friday that they are puzzled as to why the contractor abandoned the project halfway.

“It is necessary to call for an investigation into the reasons behind the contractor’s decision to halt the work,” said Kanye.

He further added, “We vividly recall the former Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Dr. Babangida Husaini, assuring us during the project’s commencement that it would be completed within 24 months. However, it is now August, and the project is already two months behind schedule.”

Kanye expressed the gratitude of the communities living along the road towards Senator Jibrin, as the project was included in his campaign promises.

“Currently, due to flooding, certain sections of the road have been washed away, and the contractor’s equipment is not even present on the site,” Kanye revealed.

“We implore the Deputy Senate President, who represents Kano North, to visit the site and inspect the progress made by the contractor,” he added.

The communities also urged the Federal Government to ensure the completion of the road’s dualization. This road connects Kano with four other states and extends all the way to Niger Republic, offering immense potential to bolster socio-economic activities across the four states and beyond.

It is worth noting that the road was initially constructed during the tenure of military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and has not undergone any significant refurbishment or reconstruction until this current project.
