The Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Transportation has issued a stern warning to the chairmen of local government councils in the state, urging them to cease harassing commercial motorcyclists within their jurisdictions.

During a meeting at the assembly complex in Abeokuta, the committee’s chairman, Oludaisi Elemide, called on the council chairmen to intervene and put a stop to the activities of “unauthorised individuals” who were targeting Okada riders under the pretext of enforcing traffic rules, including the use of crash helmets.

Elemide emphasized that the enforcement of traffic regulations fell under the purview of the motor traffic division of the Nigeria Police, as well as the state’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

He made it clear that anyone found guilty of harassing the riders would be handed over to law enforcement agents for appropriate action.

The assembly member expressed his concern after receiving numerous complaints from bike riders and their unions, detailing the actions of individuals claiming to be hired by certain local government councils.

It has been reported that unidentified persons have been taking advantage of bike riders, accusing them of violating road traffic regulations.
