Jigawa Assembly Commences Inquiry into Tax Remittance to State Government

The Jigawa House of Assembly has taken a significant step towards ensuring tax compliance by establishing a 15-man committee. This committee has been tasked with investigating the remittance of taxes to the state government by banks, companies, and other corporate entities that operate within Jigawa State.

The committee, which was inaugurated by Speaker Haruna Aliyu during the plenary session on Wednesday in Dutse, comprises individuals with diverse expertise and experience. Sani Isyaku has been appointed as the Chairman, while Lawan Muhammad will serve as the Vice-Chairman, and Isyaku Ado will assume the role of Secretary. Other noteworthy members of the committee are Ibrahim Kabir, Abubakar Sadiq, Ibrahim Hamza, Isaq Tasiu, Sani Sale, Yau Ibrahim, Idris Muhammad, Ilu Abdu, Sale Baba, Ado Yakubu, Usman Abdullahi, and Aminu Sule.

According to Speaker Aliyu, the primary responsibility of the committee is to collaborate with the State Board of Internal Revenue in order to determine the compliance status of banks and companies. Their scope of investigation will extend from the inception of these corporate entities in the state up to the present, ensuring a thorough assessment of tax payments made over the designated period.

Moreover, the committee is also mandated to delve into the business entities’ adherence to corporate social responsibility, particularly in terms of the employment of Jigawa State indigenes. This comprehensive investigation aims to shed light on the extent to which these entities are fulfilling their obligations towards the community.

It is important to note that the committee possesses the authority to engage the assistance of other lawmakers, should the need arise. This collaborative approach ensures that the committee can effectively execute its assigned responsibilities.

As this inquiry unfolds, it undoubtedly marks a significant effort by the Jigawa House of Assembly to uphold the principles of tax compliance and corporate governance within the state. By taking a proactive stance, the government aims to create an environment where businesses contribute their fair share to the development and welfare of the community.
