French President Emmanuel Macron has firmly called for a return to democratic order in Niger, a former French colony that recently experienced a military coup in July. Macron emphasized that the coup against Niger’s elected leadership was not only a blow to democracy but also an obstacle to the fight against terrorism.

Expressing France’s stance on the matter, Macron stated, “The coup is a coup against democracy in Niger, against the people in Niger, and against the fight against terrorism.” He also demanded the immediate release of detained President Mohamed Bazoum, urging the restoration of constitutional order in the country.

The military coup, which occurred in late July, has significantly strained the relationship between France and Niger. France has stationed its troops in various regions of West Africa to combat terrorism, a presence that Macron staunchly defended.

Macron explained, “If we hadn’t taken action through operations Serval and then Barkhane, there’s no doubt that Mali and Burkina Faso would no longer exist. I also have doubts whether Niger would still exist.” He emphasized that the French military operations were requested by African states themselves and successfully prevented the establishment of caliphates just a few thousand kilometers from France’s borders.

Macron further emphasized that when a coup takes place and the new rulers do not prioritize the fight against terrorism, France does not feel obligated to remain engaged. He acknowledged the devastating consequences this has on the countries affected, stating, “This is indeed dramatic for the countries concerned.”

Niger, a Sahel country with a population of approximately 26 million people, is one of the world’s poorest nations. It was one of the last democratic partners of both the United States and Europe in the region known as the “coup belt” surrounding it.

This situation has raised concerns among international observers who fear that the coup may undermine stability in the region, hinder counter-terrorism efforts, and exacerbate Niger’s existing challenges.
