The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to utilize their expertise for the betterment of Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa. Speaking as a Special Guest of Honour at the NIPR 2023 Conference and Annual General Meeting in Abuja, the nation’s capital, Idris highlighted the importance of the institute’s societal role.
Idris emphasized, “Beyond the corporate boardrooms and campaign strategies, let us also remember our broader societal role.” He urged the gathering, which consisted of NIPR members from various regions of the country, to recognize the power of their craft in driving positive change and amplifying voices that are often unheard. The Minister further stated, “Let us seize this opportunity to commit ourselves not only to our clients and organizations but also to the greater national good.”
Recognizing the need for trustworthy information dissemination, Idris emphasized the importance of building trust between the government and the citizens. He affirmed that the era of propaganda was over and that credible information could facilitate constructive conversations between the two parties. He further emphasized that this vision would guide the implementation of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Mukhtar Sirajo, the President and Chairman of the Governing Council of NIPR, praised the appointment of key members into government positions, including the Minister of Information. Sirajo recognized this appointment as a testament to the government’s acknowledgement of the vital role that PR professionals play in the nation’s development.
The NIPR Conference, with the theme “Leadership, Public Relations, and Value Creation,” has drawn public relations practitioners from across the country to Abuja. The event serves as a platform for the election of new Council members, and it began with the arrival of delegates on Wednesday.
The call by the Minister of Information for the NIPR to serve the nation reflects the government’s recognition of the institute’s potential in driving positive change and fostering meaningful dialogues. As Nigeria continues to navigate various social and political challenges, the role of the NIPR becomes increasingly crucial in promoting transparency and trust between the government and its citizens.
