The Nigerian government has issued a response to the recent comments made by the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, regarding national policies. In a publication in a national daily, Governor Obaseki criticized the government’s decisions on subsidy removal and foreign exchange rates.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, released a statement on Thursday night, stating that the Governor’s comments were not surprising but rather narrow-minded. According to Idris, “Governor Obaseki has been using the nation’s economic challenges as a diversion from his poor performance at the state level since joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). While it is common for leaders to have different views, it is important to base criticism on reality and tangible results.”

The Minister further emphasized that Governor Obaseki’s criticism of the federal government’s decisions on fuel subsidy and foreign exchange market reforms failed to consider the broader economic picture. He mentioned that various stakeholders, including Nigerians, state governors from different political parties, and global institutions such as the World Bank and IMF, have consistently advocated for the removal of fuel subsidy due to its negative impact on the economy.

Idris highlighted the benefits that Edo State has enjoyed from the removal of fuel subsidy and urged Governor Obaseki to utilize the resources to improve the state’s fortunes. He stated, “Under Governor Obaseki’s leadership, Edo State has significantly benefited from the fuel subsidy removal, as evidenced by the substantial increase in FAAC allocation between June and July 2023. Rather than focusing on incomplete narratives, the Edo State Government should prioritize impactful projects that uplift its people.”

The Minister emphasized that the current administration, led by President Tinubu, has made impactful decisions that will foster economic development. He said, “President Tinubu’s decisions are based on foresight, with the primary aim of building a resilient and sustainable economy. These decisions are made in consultation with the National Economic Council, where significant economic decisions are discussed.”

Idris expressed bewilderment at Governor Obaseki’s false accusations against the federal government and pointed out the Governor’s absence from National Economic Council meetings. He added, “Governor Obaseki should participate in these meetings to provide insights and align with the collective vision.”

The Minister assured the Nigerian people that the government is working tirelessly to address the nation’s challenges. He stated, “We understand the current difficulties faced by Nigerians and are working closely with the states and local governments to bring relief to our people. President Tinubu is leading our country through these challenging times, and we remain confident that we will soon achieve a prosperous future.”

Idris concluded by urging leaders at all levels to work cooperatively towards improving the lives of Nigerians and avoid engaging in cheap politics. He echoed President Tinubu’s call to focus on the serious business of governance in order to build a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.
