Russian President Vladimir Putin has indirectly acknowledged the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the former chief of the Wagner mercenary group. This confirmation comes a day after a plane crash claimed the lives of the individuals on board, including Prigozhin, according to authorities. In a nod to his once close relationship with Prigozhin, whose fighters played a significant role in the conflict in Ukraine, Putin described him as a “talented man” who made some grave errors in his life, as reported by Russian news agencies.

During a meeting with Denis Pushilin, the head of the Donetsk administration in Russia, Putin reflected on Prigozhin’s complex fate. While acknowledging his serious mistakes, Putin also acknowledged Prigozhin’s accomplishments, both personal and in service of the greater cause when requested.

Rosaviatsiya, the Russian government agency responsible for civil aviation, confirmed that Prigozhin and top Wagner commander Dmitri Utkin were amongst the ten passengers aboard the Embraer plane that tragically crashed in the Tver Region, located about 300 kilometers northwest of Moscow. Regrettably, there were no survivors.

Although the cause of the crash has not been determined, speculation has arisen, particularly after Putin vowed “inevitable punishment” for the mutiny leaders whom he accused of “treason.” It took nearly 24 hours for Putin to issue a public statement about the plane crash. However, he did not imply any involvement by Moscow in the incident. Instead, he highlighted the crucial role that Prigozhin’s mercenary forces played in the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing that their contribution would not be forgotten.

It is essential to note that Yevgeny Prigozhin, often referred to as “Putin’s Chef,” has faced numerous allegations of interference and influence in international affairs. These allegations have included involvement in cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and political meddling. Prigozhin’s Wagner group has been accused of operating as a quasi-private military force, supporting Russian interests in various conflicts around the world, including Ukraine and Syria.

As the investigation into the plane crash continues, both the Russian authorities and international observers will be eager to uncover the truth behind these tragic events. The memory of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s controversial involvement in geopolitical affairs will undoubtedly persist, leaving many to question the nature of his legacy and the consequences of his actions.
