President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to hold their governors accountable by voting out those who have failed to meet their expectations.
Mr Tinubu made this appeal during a meeting with a group of Islamic scholars on Thursday.
The purpose of the meeting was for the clerics to request the Federal Government’s intervention in monitoring the distribution of palliatives given to states to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy.
However, President Tinubu clarified that he does not possess the authority to issue such orders, as governors are more closely connected to the people.
Nonetheless, he expressed that he could only appeal to governors to implement the directives given to them.
“The people reside in the states. Even if I were to establish a panel, I would have to go through the governors and local governments. We will continue to engage with the governors. Nigerians must hold them accountable,” he stated.
“It is unprecedented that in a constitutional democracy, a president would sit here and issue orders to states.
“I can only plead with them to implement. The people reside in the states, and if the governor is not performing well, the people must vote them out,” he emphasized.
Mr Tinubu also revealed that the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) would receive additional assistance in the form of palliatives.
