Medical doctors in Benue State, under the umbrella of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), have embarked on a total and indefinite strike to protest the abduction of one of their members in July. The decision to go on strike was announced in a statement signed by Dr Ushakuma Anenga, Chairman of NMA in Benue State, and Dr Godwin Ameh, Secretary of the association, at the conclusion of an emergency general meeting held in Makurdi on Friday.
The abducted doctor, Dr Asema Msuega, was serving at Sankera General Hospital in Ukum LGA when he was kidnapped. Despite efforts made by the medical community to secure his release, he remains in captivity.
The NMA stated in their communique that a massive protest would be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at the Government House Roundabout in a bid to draw attention to the plight of their colleague. The doctors emphasized that the strike action was not taken lightly but was a painful decision driven by the prolonged and unresolved abduction of Dr Asema Msuega, who has been held captive for over a month. A key demand of the association is the unconditional and immediate release of their colleague.
Recognizing the potential impact of the strike on healthcare services, the NMA exempted private hospitals and clinics from the industrial action, allowing them to remain open to the public during this initial stage of the strike.
The NMA also called on the Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, as well as other stakeholders and well-meaning individuals, to intervene and help secure the release of Dr Asema Msuega. The association expressed gratitude for the support and understanding received from their members and the public during this challenging period.
