In a heartbreaking turn of events, a stampede at a stadium in the capital city of Antananarivo, Madagascar has claimed the lives of at least 13 individuals, including seven children. The incident occurred during the opening ceremony of the Indian Ocean Island Games, a multidisciplinary competition that attracts thousands of spectators.
Opposition MP Hanitra Razafimanantsoa shared the devastating news, stating, “So far, 13 people have been killed and 107 injured.” The Red Cross, who swiftly responded to the scene, confirmed the presence of seven minors among the deceased. However, they cautioned that the death toll might rise as they continue their operations.
The cause of the stampede remains unknown at this time. Antsa Mirado, a communications manager with the Red Cross, explained, “There were a lot of people at the entrance, which triggered a stampede.” Images and videos from the incident depict a chaotic scene, with dazed and shocked individuals searching for their belongings amidst the aftermath.
This is not the first time that Madagascar has experienced such a tragedy. In 2019, the Barea stadium, the largest on the island, witnessed a similar disaster during a concert held in celebration of the country’s national holiday. Sixteen people, including three children, lost their lives, and numerous others were injured.
The President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, who was present at the opening ceremony, called for a minute of silence in honor of the victims. “A tragic event occurred because there was pushing. There were injuries and deaths at the entrance,” he solemnly expressed in a televised speech.
The Indian Ocean Island Games, which commenced in Madagascar and will continue until September 3rd, have been celebrated for over four decades. This sporting event takes place every four years in various islands of the south-west Indian Ocean. The previous edition was held in Mauritius.
As the nation mourns the loss of these innocent lives, it is crucial to reflect on the safety measures and emergency protocols implemented during large-scale events. Authorities in Madagascar must analyze this tragic incident to prevent future incidents and ensure the well-being of attendees.
