In a concerning revelation, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, announced on Saturday that Nigeria continues to lose 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day, both to local and international thieves, despite the government’s efforts to eradicate this menace.
Ribadu disclosed this disheartening information during a presidential delegation’s visit to inspect oil and gas facilities in Owaza, Abia and Odogwa, Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.
During his statement, Ribadu expressed his dismay, stating that the activities of oil thieves and pipeline vandals have had a detrimental impact on Nigeria’s economy and have contributed to the rising cost of living in the country.
“It is unfortunate that a small group of individuals would brazenly steal our shared resources, inflicting immeasurable losses on the nation, communities, and the people,” lamented Ribadu.
He further revealed that Nigeria has the capacity to produce two million barrels of crude oil daily, but due to oil theft and pipeline vandalism, the country is currently producing less than 1.6 million barrels, resulting in a daily waste of 400,000 barrels of crude oil.
“Hence, we are witness to the wanton destruction caused by a handful of criminals and economic saboteurs, who ironically gain very little from their illicit activities,” added Ribadu.
Moreover, Ribadu assured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has recognized the gravity of the situation and is taking decisive measures to tackle this issue.
In his call for action, Ribadu emphasized the need for a unified front to combat oil theft and put an end to decades of attacks on Nigeria’s crucial oil and gas infrastructure.
