French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the situation in the Sahel region on Monday, emphasizing that France refuses to display “paternalism” or “weakness” in Africa. Speaking to French ambassadors at the Elysée Palace, Macron called for a “responsible policy” from Sahel countries in the face of an “epidemic of putsches” that has been witnessed in the region, most recently in Niger.
Macron expressed his concerns regarding the regional trend of military coups, citing the successive coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger. He stated that the weakness shown towards previous putsches has only fueled such actions, leading to a detrimental impact on the region. Macron highlighted the need for all states in the Sahel to adopt a responsible approach, emphasizing the support of diplomatic and military actions taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Despite the ruling military in Niger demanding the departure of the French ambassador in Niamey, Sylvain Itté, Macron confirmed that the ambassador was still in post. He commended French diplomats who have faced challenging situations in recent months, particularly in Sudan and Niger, where they have maintained their dedication amid difficult circumstances.
The military regime in Niger, headed by General Abdourahamane Tiani, called for the departure of the French ambassador and denounced the military agreements between Niamey and Paris. France currently has 1,500 soldiers in Niger who were actively involved in the fight against terrorist groups that have plagued the country and the Sahel region for years.
While pro-coup demonstrators demanded the departure of French troops near the French military base in Niamey, France asserted its firm stance and does not recognize the military regime. The French Foreign Ministry stated that “the putschists have no authority” to make such demands. Macron warned against adopting a narrative that labels France as the enemy and underscored that the putschists are putting the people of Niger in danger by abandoning the fight against terrorism and a beneficial economic policy.
The situation in the Sahel remains a top concern for France and countries in the region. Macron’s address highlights the urgency for Sahel countries to take decisive action, work collaboratively with partners, and prioritize stability and security to address the pressing challenges facing the region.
