Al-Shabab Militants Swiftly Retake Recently Captured Territories from Somali Army

Fighters belonging to the militant group al-Shabab have successfully reclaimed control of two areas that were recently captured by the Somali army during a fresh offensive. This development highlights the challenges faced by the military in combating the Islamist extremists.

A fierce battle for control of Cowsweyne ensued, resulting in significant casualties for both sides. Military sources have reported that around 50 wounded soldiers were admitted to a military hospital for treatment.

Despite the setbacks, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud remains resolute in his commitment to defeating al-Shabab within the coming months. The capture of El Bur, an al-Shabab stronghold, had initially seemed like a major victory for the army and clan militias. However, the subsequent recapture of the nearby village of Wabho by the militants demonstrates the military’s vulnerability to counter-attacks in long-established jihadist strongholds.

The situation remains fluid and uncertain, with the army now forced to reassess its strategy in dealing with al-Shabab’s resilient presence in the region. It is imperative for the military to address the underlying factors that have allowed the militants to maintain their influence and control in certain areas.
