Osun State House of Assembly has been asked to promulgate laws that will ensure government continuity.
The request was made by the Osun chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, in a letter signed by its chairman, Emmanuel Olowu and addressed to the Speaker, Adewale Egbedun.
The letter requested the Assembly to promulgate a law that will stop the abrogation of programmes of past administrations.
Olowu said the request was aimed at ensuring that democratic processes were not taken for granted and that power was not abused by any of the three arms of government.
“The abrogation of past government policies without proper democratic processes raises concerns about accountability and true representation of the electorate.
“In democratic societies, transparency in decision-making and public participation in governance is aimed at ensuring that policies reflect the collective will of the people and not just the decision of the rulers,” he said.
The Osun CDHR Chairman maintained that a robust democratic system involves open discussions, expert opinions, and engagement with citizens to make informed choices.
While hinting that avoiding this process may lead to unintended consequences and erode the foundation of a fair and representative governance system, he added that it was mandatory that governments need to uphold democratic norms to foster trust, legitimacy, and the well-being of the societies.
The Committee also requested for a law to be enacted mandating the upload of past and future laws that will be enacted in the State.
“It will enhance the democratic process, and ensure that the citizens are carried along in governance.
“Such a step will promote democratic practice, encourage citizens’ participation in governance and further promote the Freedom of Information Act in Osun State,” it stated.
