Abuja Light Rail Set to Begin Soon, FCTA Ensures Adequate Security

The Transport Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has given residents of Abuja the assurance of robust security measures when the Abuja Light Rail kicks off.

Mr. Ubokutom Nyah, Secretary of the secretariat, provided this assurance after inspecting the ongoing rehabilitation of the metro rail line project in Abuja on Wednesday.

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd. (CCECC), responsible for the rehabilitation project, recently made a commitment to complete the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) system by May 2024, during a visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Nyah emphasized that security is one of the core pillars of the secretariat’s vision, alongside affordability and flexibility.

He further reiterated that the security of the light rail operation was of paramount importance and that comprehensive strategies had been implemented to ensure the safety of the rail tracks.

Expressing confidence, Nyah stated that the commencement of commercial operations for the Abuja light rail is expected to happen earlier than anticipated.

The secretary also disclosed that the vandalized sections of the rail tracks had been fully repaired, with the communication cables currently being imported.

“We are hopeful that the project will be completed ahead of the scheduled nine-month period. The residents of the FCT are in for a remarkable surprise and a great time,” Nyah said.

“We have made significant progress, having already completed over 60 percent of the rail tracks. The vandalized sections have been effectively fixed,” he added.

“We are currently carrying out the cleaning process, and I have been informed that the communication cables are already en route and will arrive soon.

“Based on what we have witnessed today, there is a high possibility that the completion of the ARMT will come sooner than expected. It is truly an outstanding job,” Nyah concluded.
