The Niger State Government, located in the north central region of Nigeria, has established a strategic partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to tackle pressing challenges in security, agriculture, education, and health within the state.
This significant collaboration was formalized during a roundtable meeting held at the Government House in Minna. The event brought together key stakeholders from Niger State and a delegation from the UNDP.
During the meeting, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago addressed the detrimental impact of bandit activities in the state, resulting in a rise in Internally Displaced Persons, an alarming increase in the number of out-of-school children, and setbacks in agricultural pursuits.
Acknowledging the severity of the humanitarian crisis, Governor Bago emphasized the dire need for assistance from global development partners. The involvement of the UNDP presents a beacon of hope for the people of Niger State.
Governor Bago stated, “Niger State needs help, and we are not hesitant to seek assistance from the world. The state grapples with the repercussions of criminal activities by bandits and extremists, affecting numerous Local Government Areas.”
“Despite efforts by the State government and security agencies, both kinetic and non-kinetic, to address the security challenges, the desired outcomes remain elusive.”
Malam Mohammed Yahaya, the Resident Representative of the UNDP, underscored the significance of the roundtable meeting as an opportunity for the organization to gain firsthand insights into the complex challenges faced by Niger State. This understanding will enable the development of effective and tailored solutions.
Yahaya assured that the UNDP is fully committed to supporting the entirety of Nigeria, with a particular focus on Niger State.
Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers in Niger State and Etsu Nupe, expressed his gratitude for the UNDP’s willingness to collaborate, recognizing the positive impact it would have on the state and its citizens.
In appreciation of this partnership, the Etsu Nupe honored the Resident Representative of the UNDP with the title “Shugaban Raya Kasan Niger,” which translates to “Vanguard of Peace in the Development of Niger State.”
The event also featured a ceremonial exchange of gifts between the UNDP delegation and the Governor of Niger State.
