Former Vice President Osinbajo Assumes Role as Chairman of Climate Agency

In a significant development, Nigeria’s immediate past Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has been appointed as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A). CAP-A is a public benefit organization dedicated to harnessing Africa’s potential as a global hub for climate action.

Yesterday, the organization announced this appointment in a statement, as conveyed by Mohammed Brimah from the Media Office of Prof. Osinbajo.

Brimah highlighted that CAP-A’s vision is rooted in the belief that Africa’s demographic profile, growth trajectory, and abundant natural resources, coupled with its significantly low current carbon emissions, position the continent to not only achieve net-zero emissions but also contribute significantly to reducing global carbon footprint sooner than other parts of the world.

Accepting the appointment, Prof. Osinbajo expressed his appreciation for CAP-A’s efforts in shifting the narrative from Africa being a mere victim of the climate crisis to recognizing its potential to propel global climate action. He stated, “Since the establishment of CAP-A, I have witnessed their dedication to unlocking Africa’s potential and accelerating global climate action.”

Prof. Osinbajo further affirmed his commitment to the organization’s mission of spearheading climate-positive growth and supporting CAP-A’s teams and programs across Africa. He said, “I am honored to chair the Board of Directors and contribute to realizing Africa’s economic development through sustainable and climate-conscious strategies.”

CAP-A’s founder, James Mwangi, expressed deep gratitude for Prof. Osinbajo’s acceptance of the role as Chairman, emphasizing his invaluable experience and passion for driving economic transformation in African countries while harmonizing with climate goals. Mwangi stressed the significance of this appointment, especially following the successful inaugural Africa Climate Summit, which underscored the urgency for accelerated climate action.
