The Recording Academy, who has confirmed that plans are currently being considered to create a category for Afrobeats at the Grammy awards, also made it known that a new category known as “Best Song for Social Change” will be introduced. According to the academy, the category was proposed by their voting members to recognize creators of message-driven music that responds to the social issues of our time and has the potential for positive global impact.

Following this new development, a sizable number of music fans are tipping and rallying support for the DMW frontline act and owner to be nominated for the category due to the impact his Afrofusion tune “Fem” had during the #ENDSARS Portest youth movement in Nigeria.

The #ENDSARS movement was a peaceful protest organised and led by Nigerian youths in October 2020 to march against police brutality, bad governance, and other mind-shattering vices in the country. However, the protest was met by the gruesome massacre of civilians on October 20, 2020, at the Lekki-Toll Gate in Lagos.

Davido’s “FEM” during the protest was an energetic song that constantly aided the cause and sent a message to the oppresors that the people were tired of “mere talks” about change but would rather see “actions”.
