The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) responded to a summons by the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday, regarding the non-use of Yoruba language in announcements for regulated public transport services.
LAMATA was joined by representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture at the committee hearing. The Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseyi Osiyemi, and the Special Adviser for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, were present.
Osiyemi and Aregbe commended the assembly’s initiative in bringing Yoruba language to the forefront and assured compliance with the legislation.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. David Setonji, along with the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, explained that the summons aimed to uphold existing legislation on the use of Yoruba language in transactions within the state.
Setonji acknowledged LAMATA’s prompt compliance with the Assembly’s directive while emphasizing the responsibility of all ministries and agencies to adhere to the regulation.
