Independence: Remain hopeful for a better Nigeria – Obi advises citizens

Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has urged Nigerians not to lose hope after 63 years of independence but to remain optimistic that a better Nigeria is still attainable.

A Call for Hope

In his goodwill message to celebrate the 63rd Independence anniversary in Lagos on Sunday, Obi, who is also the former governor of Anambra State, acknowledged the uncertainties and hardships that the citizens of Nigeria are currently facing due to persistent leadership failures. However, he emphasized that while the situation may be critical, it is not without hope.

Leadership and Nation-building

Obi drew an analogy between a nation’s life and the parameters of modern technology, stating that if garbage is inputted, garbage will be the output. He highlighted that a nation’s fate and destiny are determined by the decisions made by its people and the quality of leadership they choose.

“Nigeria cannot be an exception. If we subscribe to rogue leadership, then we must face the consequences.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 63 years of independence, Obi posed thought-provoking questions about the type of questions Nigerians are asking their leaders and the kind of answers they expect. He stressed that despite the present realities, he remains hopeful that a new Nigeria is possible, but the burden of responsibility lies on the Nigerian people.

Retrospection and the Path Ahead

Obi pointed out that every October 1st, since 1960, Nigerians have taken the time to reflect on their journey as a nation. However, upon reflection, he questioned whether the nation’s current state aligns with where they ought to be, considering the vast human and natural resources available.

“Where we are is where we are supposed to be despite our vast human and natural resources?”

Hope for the Future

Concluding his message, the presidential candidate extended his warm wishes to Nigerians on their independence anniversary and prayed for God’s continued mercy and grace upon the nation.
