Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, has expressed his confusion over manager Erik ten Hag’s decision to sideline midfielder Scott McTominay at the club.
Schmeichel’s comments came after McTominay’s stunning injury-time goals secured a dramatic comeback victory against Brentford on Saturday.
It is worth noting that McTominay was heavily linked with a move away from his boyhood club in the summer, with West Ham United showing interest.
However, Man Utd did not receive a suitable bid and decided to retain the services of the 26-year-old.
This season, McTominay has seen his playing time diminish under ten Hag. Nevertheless, his match-winning performance in the 2-1 win against Brentford may have potentially saved his manager’s job.
“He’s shown that he has the ability to make an impact,” said Schmeichel during an interview with Premier League productions, praising McTominay’s heroic display.
“I find it perplexing. Scott McTominay was on the transfer list throughout the summer, and I can’t comprehend the reason behind that decision. He is a phenomenal player; the team needs versatile players who can perform in different positions and come off the bench to change the game, and he is undoubtedly one of them.
“There are new players arriving, and it raises questions about why certain individuals are still present. McTominay’s dedication to the club is unwavering; he plays with immense passion and will always defend the club’s colors.”
