Nigeria’s national team goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, has chosen to address the criticisms surrounding his performance in the Super Eagles’ recent 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia.
Uzoho, who currently plays for Omonia Nicosia, allowed a cheap goal during the second half of the match at Estadio Municipal de Portimao. He inadvertently directed a harmless free-kick into his own net.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper has faced intense scrutiny in the past for similar blunders. However, Uzoho is now offering his defense for his recent mistake.
Prior to the Super Eagles’ friendly against Mozambique, Uzoho stated, “Overall, it was a good game for us, but the result did not accurately reflect our performance.”
“I acknowledge that I could have done better in that particular situation that led to the goal from a free-kick,” Uzoho continued. “As players, we make mistakes, but we also learn from them.”
Reflecting on the nature of his position, Uzoho added, “Being a goalkeeper is a significant responsibility, and mistakes can occur. You can make ten outstanding saves and exhibit excellent control in your area, but one mistake can overshadow everything else.”
Uzoho concluded by requesting ongoing support from fans, stating, “We always strive to perform well, and the fans should continue to support whoever is in goal. Their unwavering support will be greatly appreciated.”
