The House of Representatives has called on the Tinubu administration to reopen the Maigatari, Mai’Aduwa, Kongwalam, and Illela borders in Jigawa, Katsina, and Sokoto states, respectively. This plea comes as the Green Chamber adopted a motion presented by Aliyu Sani Madaki and mandated the Committee on Customs and Excise to ensure implementation.
Boosting International Trade
The House acknowledges that Maigatari in Jigawa State, Kongwalam in Katsina State, Illela in Sokoto State, and even Kano State play a vital role in facilitating large-scale international trade between Nigerians and neighboring countries such as Niger, Mali, Chad, and Cameroon. These border towns are renowned for their bustling markets.
Prioritizing Local Production
In a bid to encourage local production, the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had closed these borders, putting a temporary halt to cross-border trade. However, with the resumption of economic activities and the need to boost commerce, the House of Representatives is now championing the reopening of these northern borders.
The closure of these border points had initially been implemented to support local production initiatives. Yet, the current context reveals the necessity of reopening these borders to enhance economic growth, increase trade opportunities, and strengthen bilateral relations with neighboring countries.
Mandating the Committee on Customs and Excise
By mandating the Committee on Customs and Excise to oversee the reopening of these borders, the House of Representatives is reinforcing the need for swift action. This committee, composed of knowledgeable and experienced individuals, will be responsible for ensuring the seamless resumption of trade activities at the Maigatari, Mai’Aduwa, Kongwalam, and Illela borders.
