President Tinubu Withdraws Appointment of 25-Year-Old FERMA Chairman

By Temitope Mustapha, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has directed the withdrawal of the appointment of Engr. Imam Kashim Imam, a 25-year-old, who was recently appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

In a statement signed by the President’s Spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, it was confirmed that the withdrawal of the nomination takes immediate effect.

The President’s decision only affects the appointment of Kashim Imam and does not impact other appointments to the Board and Executive Management team of FERMA.

Engr. Imam Kashim Imam, who completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in August 2022, is a first-class graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Brighton University.

This sudden turn of events has left many Nigerians questioning the rationale behind the withdrawal of such a young and promising candidate for a crucial role in road maintenance.

Supporters of Kashim Imam argue that his age is not a reflection of his capability and knowledge. Having proven his academic excellence and potential during his time at university, Imam was seen as a fresh and innovative choice to lead FERMA.

However, critics argue that experience is an essential factor in such appointments, especially when it comes to managing an agency as vital as FERMA. They believe that someone with a more extensive track record in the field would be a better fit for the role.

Regardless of differing opinions, the withdrawal of Kashim Imam as the FERMA Chairman raises questions about the criteria for appointments and the decision-making process in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Only time will tell if President Tinubu’s decision will be followed by the appointment of a more seasoned individual or if it will lead to further debates and discussions on the subject.

For now, Nigerians eagerly await updates on the next steps regarding the leadership of FERMA and the impact it may have on road maintenance and infrastructure development in the country.
