In a recent plenary session, Jeremiah Umaru, the member representing Akwanga, Wamba, and Nasarawa Eggon Constituency in the House of Representatives, raised the alarm over the escalating incidents of kidnapping in Nasarawa State. Umaru expressed his deep concerns regarding the state’s security situation, urging for immediate action to address the issue. He lamented that the state is slowly turning into a safe haven for armed criminals and kidnappers, posing a grave threat to the safety of the residents.
Umaru identified the mass infiltration of criminals from neighboring states as the main cause of the insecurity in Nasarawa. If left unchecked, he warned that the consequences would be detrimental not only to the state but also to Nigeria as a whole, impacting the economy and the overall security of the nation.
In response to Umaru’s plea, the House of Representatives passed a resolution, calling on the Federal Government to establish permanent security formations in Nasarawa State. These formations would serve to strengthen security and combat criminal activities effectively. The House also directed the relevant committees on Defence, Army, Air Force and Police Affairs, as well as Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, to ensure strict compliance with the resolution and take necessary actions to address the security challenges.
Nasarawa State has recently witnessed an increase in kidnapping incidents, with several high-profile individuals falling victim to these criminal acts. Notable cases include the abduction of students and the former Deputy Governor of the state, Professor Onje Gye-Wado. Traditional leaders such as Gom Mama, HRH Alhaji Bala Adams Zubairu, Sarkin Gurku, HRH Alhaji Jibril Mamman Waziri, and his wife, Hajiya Sa’adatu Waziri, have also been targeted.
The rising insecurity in Nasarawa State necessitates immediate action and collaboration between the government, security agencies, and local communities to restore peace and ensure the safety of the residents. It is crucial for all stakeholders to work together to address this pressing issue and protect the lives and properties of the people in the state.
