In a heartfelt tribute, former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili has marked the third anniversary of the #EndSARS protests by calling for the remembrance of those who lost their lives during the demonstrations in 2020, emphasizing that “it’s never over until it’s over.”
The #EndSARS protests erupted in 2020 as Nigerian youths congregated at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, expressing their grievances against police brutality and overall misgovernance.
The peaceful protests took a violent turn when soldiers opened fire on the unarmed demonstrators at the tollgate, resulting in numerous casualties.
As the nation reflects on this tragic incident, Ezekwesili reminds us that the fight for justice and accountability continues.
Sharing her thoughts on X, she wrote: “How can we ever forget 20-10-20? It was a historic day when the youth of our nation revealed an unwavering commitment to Franz Fanon’s profound words: ‘Each generation must, out of relative obscurity, discover its mission, fulfill it, or betray it.’
“On this third anniversary, we must never forget the heroism of those who lost their lives, were injured, and tortured simply for daring to stand up and demand a well-governed country that upholds their constitutional rights.
“We must also honour those who continue to persevere in their mission, paying the price every day to achieve it. The struggle is not over until our objectives are achieved.”
