Investigation Launched into Alleged Assassination Attempt on Yahaya Bello

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has commenced an investigation into the reported attack on Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has raised concerns about the security of political figures in Nigeria.

Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, who oversees the FCT, revealed this information in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja. The governor’s motorcade allegedly became embroiled in an altercation with military personnel at a checkpoint, leading to the reported attack.

According to preliminary findings, the crisis unfolded after the governor’s convoy refused to stop at the military checkpoint. It has since been established that the armed confrontation was a result of this initial disagreement.

Kingsley Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information and Communications in Kogi State, had previously released a statement claiming that an assassination attempt had been made on Governor Bello, just a few kilometers away from Abuja. The attack took place as the governor was en route to an official engagement from Lokoka.

Fanwo further stated that the assailants were dressed in military uniforms and ambushed the governor’s motorcade. They opened fire indiscriminately, targeting the governor’s vehicle as well as others in the convoy. Luckily, the quick response of the governor’s security personnel prevented the unknown soldiers from carrying out their sinister plans.

The attacks occurred at three different locations, with the final ambush taking place around Kwali in the Federal Capital Territory at approximately 4:20 pm. The motive behind the attack remains uncertain, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend the culprits and determine their affiliations.

Incidents of this nature underscore the need for enhanced security measures for public officials. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by politicians and the importance of unwavering commitment to their safety.

As the investigation progresses, law enforcement agencies will spare no effort in their pursuit of justice and the protection of public figures. The looming presence of security personnel will hopefully act as a deterrent to future attacks on elected officials, ensuring their safety and allowing them to carry out their official duties unhindered.

NAN (News Agency of Nigeria) will continue to monitor the investigation and provide updates as further details emerge.
