The National Police Service Council has officially confirmed the appointment of Kayode Egbetokun as the substantive Inspector General of Police, taking the helm of the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at a press briefing after the Council Meeting, Ibrahim Geidam, the Minister of Police Affairs, announced Egbetokun’s confirmation and also revealed that President Tinubu’s recommendation played a significant role in the decision. The recommendation was based on Egbetokun’s exceptional track record and wealth of experience in the field.
Geidam commended Egbetokun for his exemplary performance during his three-month tenure as the acting Inspector General of Police, which began on June 20.
Highlighting Egbetokun’s achievements, Geidam explained that the acting IGP had implemented several impactful police and security programs, demonstrating his outstanding qualifications for the position.
On June 19, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as the new Inspector General of Police, succeeding Usman Baba, who had been appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari on April 6, 2021.
Egbetokun’s impressive career in the Nigeria Police Force dates back to his enlistment on March 3, 1990, which means he will celebrate his 35th year in service in September 2024.
