NLC President Narrates Ordeal in Police Custody: “I was beaten, God must’ve taken time to create me”

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has come forward to share his harrowing experience in police custody after being arrested in Owerri, Imo State.

Ajaero, who is known for his relentless fight for workers’ rights, revealed that the beating he endured while in police custody made him believe that God must have taken extra time in creating him. The brutality he faced serves as a testament to the challenges faced by those advocating for justice and fairness in the country.

The incident occurred during a protest organized by the NLC in Owerri, the capital of Imo State. The purpose of the protest was to rally Imo workers against the alleged violation and abuse of their rights and privileges by the state government.

Unfortunately, the peaceful demonstration was marred by the presence of miscreants who disrupted the gathering and incited violence. As chaos ensued, Ajaero found himself at the mercy of the Nigeria Police Force, who promptly whisked him away.

After being released from custody, Ajaero recounted the unsettling encounter with the police. He revealed that they not only threatened to take him to court but also subjected him to physical assault.

Ajaero’s response to the police’s threats demonstrated his deep understanding of the legal framework. He explained that an interim order, if issued, would eventually expire unless followed by another court order. He asserted that the police could not abruptly initiate prosecution without proper legal proceedings.

The physical violence Ajaero endured left a lasting impact on him. In a poignant statement, he expressed his conviction that God had taken special care in creating him, given the severity of the beating he received.

This incident highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive examination of the treatment of individuals peacefully advocating for their rights. It serves as a stark reminder that even those who champion societal changes can fall victim to injustice.

As Nigerians, we should all reflect on the significance of this event and strive for a society where everyone can express their opinions without fear of reprisals. It is only through open dialogue, respect for human rights, and a commitment to justice that we can build a better Nigeria for all.
