Armed Robbers Disrupt Imo Gubernatorial Election, Steal N1.5m Meant for Vote Buying

In a bold and disruptive move, armed robbers targeted All Progressives Congress (APC) agents during the ongoing Imo State gubernatorial election at All Saints Anglican Church, Egbu, Owerri North Local Government Area. The assailants made off with a staggering sum of N1.5 million, which was allegedly intended for vote buying.

The audacious robbery took place amidst sporadic gunfire as the assailants stormed the grounds of the church, which housed four polling units, and demanded money from the APC officials.

Media Talk Africa reporters on the scene witnessed a scene of chaos, with individuals, including journalists and police officers, scrambling for safety amid the terrifying gunfire.

Chinaza, a voter at the scene, recounted the harrowing experience, describing how the gunmen initially blended in with the crowd before revealing their true intentions by brandishing their weapons, sending everyone, including the police, fleeing in fear.

He remarked, “We had just expressed our grievances about the APC agent’s insufficient negotiation for votes when these individuals entered and, amidst the chaos of gunfire, demanded the money that was to be distributed, prompting everyone to flee.”

“Everything unfolded in a matter of minutes, and then they departed in their vehicles,” he added.

Chinaza also revealed that prior to the robbery, the agents had been in the process of dividing the money earmarked for vote buying amongst themselves.
