In a recent plenary session at the legislative chamber in Minna, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, expressed deep concern over the excessive dependence of the state on federal government revenue.
Sarkindaji highlighted the abundance of natural resources in Niger State, emphasizing that it should not be grappling with pervasive poverty and relying almost entirely on federation allocation and international donor agencies for sustenance.
Addressing the prevailing economic hardships faced by Nigerians, the Speaker underscored the crucial need for elected representatives to intimately connect with their constituents and comprehend their experiences.
He stressed, “It is imperative for us to bridge the gap and grasp the pulse of our people. This is the fundamental approach to resolving their challenges and enhancing their quality of life. Nigeria is currently grappling with an unprecedented economic crisis, and Nigerians are enduring profound adversity.”
Furthermore, Sarkindaji cautioned that neglecting their duty to serve the people would be political suicide, affirming that the economic distress is a national issue transcending geographical boundaries.
The Speaker commended the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative arms, acknowledging their concerted initiative to revamp the entire governance structure and pave the way for a reinvigorated Niger State.
