Gombe State Embraces Technology Solutions to Drive Economic Growth

The Gombe State Government is proactively pursuing technology-based initiatives to stimulate the state’s economy. A significant step in this direction is the upcoming inaugural competition compelling youths to employ ICT in devising solutions for the state’s predicaments.

The two-day event, named Hackathon, was generously sponsored by the Onyx Investment Advisory Ltd in collaboration with the Gombe State government, paving the way for the 2nd Gombe State Investment Summit scheduled for the first quarter of 2024.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Onyx Group, Mrs. Aisha Bako, described the Hackathon as an avenue for talented young minds to leverage ICT and technology in addressing the environmental challenges in Gombe State. She emphasized that the event seeks to harness technology-based solutions for sustainable development, not only within Gombe State but on a national scale.

The outcome of the previous Gombe State Investment Summit highlighted ICT as one of the top five sectors in which the state holds a comparative advantage for potential investors. Mrs. Bako affirmed that Gombe State particularly excelled in providing opportunities for job creation and skills development, particularly in the ICT sector.

Despite the thematic focus on ‘Sustainable Environment and Sustainable Solution’, Mrs. Bako underscored that the essence of the Hackathon transcends this. It aims to spotlight Gombe State as a trailblazer in human capital for ICT, technology, and innovation. This strategic positioning aligns seamlessly with the upcoming investment summit, demonstrating to potential investors the innovative prowess of the state’s youth.

This initiative is not isolated to Gombe State, with over 50 participants from diverse regions across the country actively engaged in the program. An Associate Professor of Computer Network Security at the Gombe State University, Mr. Bala Modi, emphasized that digital skills are the driving force of leading global economies. He further urged the government to intensify investments in digital skills, emphasizing its pivotal role in diversifying Nigeria’s economy.

The concerted efforts of the Gombe State Government, in collaboration with private sector partners, mark a significant stride towards leveraging technology for sustainable economic growth. It is evident that embracing digital skills and ICT innovation is pivotal, not only for Gombe State but also for Nigeria as a whole.
